While London is considered by many to be multicultural, you’d be surprised to find how hard it is to find a good salon that specialises in afro hair and mixed-race textures.
In all honestly, I think it’s hard enough finding a good salon full stop let alone one that deals with hair that requires a plethora of treatments chemical and other-wise. That’s why I think people don’t jump ship from their salons once they find one that in their mind at least scores a 5/10. It’s almost not worth the risk of trying somewhere new.
I’m the kind of girl that it has a barnet worthy of three people. Last time I had my hair done in London, it took THREE people to blow-dry my hair! I admit I do have a lot of hair but keeping it groomed is important to me.
In the search of a London-based salon, I’ve been thinking about what a good salon means to me:
- an experienced hairstylist, or at least one that can talk to you on the level rather than them acting as if you don’t know you’re own hair…
- clean premises – time and time again, I come across shabby interiors where people have let their shops get run down because they tried to hard for a modern fit in the first place and then they can’t afford the upkeep. Keep it simple and clean.
- customer service – airing your dirty laundry infront of your customer might sound very ‘Barbershop’ but there’s a time and a place, not everyone wants to listen to your grievances with your husband!
- an idea of a start and finish time – don’t just let your client sit there like a fool – beginning, middle or end!
I’ve searched online for hair salons across the capital, and just by looking at their websites I’m reluctant to pick up the phone. It seems these salons are behind the times.
I would genuinely like to have my hair done, one night after work or on a weekend at a salon that’s convenient to me and go for an appointment that I’m going to look forward to – not just because of the finished product, but also because of the experience too.
Do you think I’m asking for too much?
Tell me about your good or bad experiences – I’d love a good recommendation and places to avoid!
